While everyone is making resolutions to lose weight and improve their finances, we’re thinking long-term about the health of our skin. Here are 5 tips that will help you get healthy skin in 2015.
Drink lots of water. Proper hydration has many health benefits, one of which is helping your skin look its best. If you’re dehydrated, your skin will look dry, thin and wrinkly. Staying properly hydrated helps keep your skin looking plump, dewy and younger.
Quit smoking. Nicotine is a vasoconstrictor, which means it decreases the blood flow that provides your skin with oxygen and nutrients. Using tobacco products also damages the collagen and elastin that keeps your skin looking firm and youthful.
Eat a balanced diet. While there’s no hard evidence that specific foods cause specific reactions in all cases, there’s plenty of research that proves diet has an impact on your skin. A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean protein will help control hormone fluctuations that can contribute to breakouts.
Wear sunscreen. We know, you’ve heard it a thousand times, but adding sunscreen to your daily skin care routine will help prevent sunburns, premature aging of the skin, and sun spots. Choose a moisturizer or lotion with SPF 15.
- Get a skin exam. This is something you should really do every year. This gives you and your dermatologist a chance to spot any areas of concern, such as skin cancer, and evaluate your skin on a regular basis. Conditions such as eczema, psoriasis and rosacea can develop as you age.
